the queen inherited her interest in fulton umbrellas from her mother, the queen mother. back in 1988, the queen mother's secretary contacted the company searching for the clear domed umbrella style - "birdcage" - that the brand was known for.
in 2016, hello magazine interviewed nigel fulton, the company’s ceo. he said that she favoured the birdcage style of umbrella because it allowed her to remain as visible as possible in even the wettest conditions. the style had gone out of production due to a lag in sales, but fulton was quick to accommodate the request. "[we] would be very happy to put it back into production if the queen mother wants it," nigel fulton - the son of the former ceo - recalled his father replying.
the birdcage soon became her regular umbrella of choice, and this tradition has been passed down to the queen. although fulton started working with the queen’s dress maker only in 2003, her majesty had previously used some birdcage umbrellas on her own.
birdcage umbrellas are affordable pieces that can be found for just £20. however, royal fashion fans will never be able to purchase an exact copy of one of her majesty's umbrellas. "everything we produce for the queen is bespoke. the specifications are slightly different, the colours are unique, and they do not form part of our regular collection"; "the queen’s senior dresser usually sends us swatches of material or colour chips for us to match the colored border on the birdcage umbrellas. we then produce samples for their approval, and if no further changes are needed we make up the finished umbrellas", fulton said.
in 2008, the company was granted a royal warrant from the queen (royal warrants are granted to people or companies who have regularly supplied goods or services for a minimum of five years to the queen, the duke of edinburgh or the prince of wales). a year later, her majesty even took a tour of the fulton factory in east london with the duke of edinburgh (pictures 5-6). their umbrellas are also regularly used by the duchess of cornwall and the duke and duchess of cambridge.
