When i returned to south wales from chelsea in the early 1960s, starting out as a professional painter, i became fascinated by industrial subject matter. my studio was just outside port talbot and i would visit the steel works for inspiration. i was amazed by the atmosphere, energy and drama of the smelting furnaces. many of my early abstract works depicted this process, from the hot molten reds and whites to the blues and greys of cooling metal. sadly i have very few images of paintings from those early years, but i recently visited a family member and collector who had been a patron at the time. i was able to photograph this painting and it reminded me of my fascination with our welsh industrial heritage. it inspired me to revisit this subject matter in the form of my recent miniature works in acrylic and oil glaze.
