I told myself I wouldn't post anything till after I got back from this trip. But it's kind of hard not to share how much of a blessing this has been. There's too many moments that I've been documenting and I don't want to lose the memories that come along with it. Being here has taught me to capture each moment and to pass it along to whoever stumbles across my page when they search for Rwanda. People think that Africa as a whole isn't safe but that's not the case. Rwanda is one of the safest countries I've ever gotten to visit. And as I have said before, Rwandans are one of the strongest people I've ever met. After the genocide that happened here (where Hutus were killing Tutsis in 1994) these people have learned how to forgive one another and live harmoniously side by side. Some of the Rwandans have shared their stories with us and it breaks my heart when I hear them say they felt like they weren't worth saving when the rest of the world watched and stayed silent. It breaks my heart to hear about all their loved ones that they've lost and yet they can still smile, laugh and say they forgive the people who has taken away their families too soon. I feel like the people here deserve so much more. I feel like people need to give them a chance to prove they aren't violent like the media claims them to be. So if you ever thought about visiting, do it. Request to live with a family on the country side and I promise you, you will not regret it. #africa #teachrwanda

We're a little over two weeks into this trip and time keeps flying by. I find myself falling in love with something new everyday and not wanting to leave. Shawn and I have made new friendships throughout this journey and it's going to be so difficult when it's time to head back home. I'm not looking forward to saying murabeho to these amazing people. Being completely submerged and welcomed into their culture and seeing the children everyday have really made this trip something I'll never forget. Rwanda, I think it's safe to say that you stole my heart. I love everything about you - from your scenic views, your beautiful people and the slow paced lifestyle I've adapted and appreciated. #teachrwanda #africa

Shawn and I visited La Colombiere School yesterday. It had to be one of the more modern schools we've gotten to visit and volunteer at. This school also had the most children we've had to work with. #teachrwanda #africa

Shawn and I got to visit Kigabiro School today. This school has to be the poorest of the four schools that Teach Rwanda assists in. It's sad that we can no longer build these kids a new playground due to not having enough funds. We hope to be able to later down the road. #africa #teachrwanda

Snack time with the nursery one students before we continued to have fun. these kids were super excited to learn new songs and games. shawn and i got to teach the kids "if you're happy and you know it" and duck, duck, goose (but we ended up changing the game to cow, cow, goat). today was so rewarding seeing the kids laugh and sing along. its going to be difficult when it's time to leave. these kids have brought so much joy and i'm going to miss every single one of them. #africa #teachrwanda

Did you know that the kids here learn three languages? Kinyarwandan, French and English. These children are incredibly smart and learn by using all five senses. Everything is hands on and I think it's a perfect way for children to learn. #africa #teachrwanda

One of my favorite photos from today. It was our first volunteering day at Bright School and these children had so much energy. I wish there were more of me so I could spend more time with each and every one of them. Already looking forward to tomorrow's agenda. #africa #teachrwanda

Hi friends! This year I’ve decided to donate a portion of what I make through @crazybird_yoga each month to a cause about which I am truly passionate. Though it’s not a lot, every bit helps.

April 2018: TEACH Rwanda 🇷🇼
TEACH Rwanda is transforming early childhood education and teacher education in Rwanda. The teachers are all Rwandan and are given top-notch professional development which allows them to offer young children engaging and meaningful learning experiences. TEACH Rwanda is transforming education in the country, focusing on student-driven learning.

I have been a volunteer teacher mentor for TEACH Rwanda for a little over a year now and it is a cause that is very close to my heart. I encourage you to read more about TEACH Rwanda and consider donating to this amazing organization if you are able (link in bio)!

These photos are from an assembly we had yesterday with a founder of a program called Teach Rwanda. Our students received a brief history lesson and learned about what life is like in Rwanda. They also learned how Teach Rwanda is working to improve the quality of education for children there.
One of our teachers sent the following comment to our principle in amazement of how engaged her students were,

David heard his name called to present his work today. He promptly got up and told the class what he'd done. David knows he belongs at school with his friends. Down syndrome doesn't stop David from learning or being with friends, because everyone in Bright School is a part of the classroom community. #EveryOneBelongs #TEACHRwanda
