An asana is only beautiful if it is powerful, but this power is not in relation to somebody else or something else.
power, beauty, is where there is space in the body, in the mind. it is only there where the power of the muscle, the power of ambition, the power of thought, is absent. it is only there where the mind and body do not look ahead to a future, to the fruit of its present actions, but when both mind and body are fused in the moment, in the pose, without fear, with interest and joy.
when that happens, even for a split second, there is an inner explosion of energy which transforms that pose into a thing of beauty, into a thing spiritual, in which the position ‘does itself’, in which there is no warfare between wanting to do it and resisting doing it.
