(1/2) a trip to the moon / le voyage sur la lune - georges méliès (1902)
classic movies i might not have seen
one movie a day. each day, a different theme. today is for classic movies i might not have watched but are important in movie history.
the moon with a rocket in his eye is one of the most iconic images in movie history. why? because it was the first blockbuster to ever have been made.
that is, an epic story on a few old scientists going to the moon and back on a rocket, numerous extras ( 20 to 30 actors on the screen), special effects with men disappearing all of a sudden in a cloud of smoke and the such, great visuals and set designs ( very detailed drawings that for the audience of the time looked so real...). all the ingredients of the blockbuster sci-fi movie are in this movie and it was released as early as 1920. it even had an actual soundtrack as it appears that méliès had ordered, a year after the release of the movie, ezra read to compose a score that could be played alongside the movie : a piano piece called a trip to the moon: comic descriptive fantasia, which follows méliès's film scene by scene.
yes, as soon as 1902, the movies were already ainto superproductions. all that for 10,000 francs! it was a huge success for years.
watching it nowadays, it is still impressive as the people and the objects transform or disappear quite smoothly, the several layers of the stage designs look convincing and the actors are able to move easily in it sometimes being able to have a part of their bodies hidden behind them.
I bought my first kilt at the highland games over the weekend. i wore it today and i have to say that i am completely sold. it was super comfortable and i stayed warmer than i expected. i was going to take a picture of it but my hair was waaaayyyy more awesome today. #theatre#specialeffects#rigger#choreographer#greathair#waves
