I believe in time travel. i believe in it because i have done it numerous times. every time i go to mickey’s deli i time travel. i am transported to 1997 when i was 12 years old. i walk in, look to the counter at my left, and give an awkward acknowledgment to whoever is standing there. if i am lucky i won't have to sidestep through a bunch of big bros and bikini girls who are waiting to order, or for their name to be called. the air smells the exact same, like beach and bread, with an ever so slight hint of unmistakably italian cooking, a pasta water and tomato sauce aroma. i continue passed the chip aisle and the wine section, taking seemingly endless, slightly wet, barefooted sandy steps towards the soda cooler. the selection is daunting. the cooler towers over me like a skyscraper in a downtown city. i look up at it, squinting my eyes to see the selection on the top shelf. the sodas look down at me. all the flavors of stewart’s, boylan, and virgil’s, imports like fanta and jarritos, and of course the big brands. they also have that gross all natural hansen’s soda. yuck! similar in the way i will eventually browse in a beer section as an adult, i become indecisive and more or less end up going with the first one that caught my eye properly, with the light hitting it just right. no matter my choice i reach for something that will seemingly ensure diabetes. then i make my way back to the chip aisle. this choice should be easier. the green lays bag, the sour cream and onion ones. salty, but not plain. flavored but not overwhelmingly so…this is where my time travel ends. i come back to reality. i find myself a grown man standing in a chip aisle, shoes on, looking at all the funky flavors. i begin to think in talking heads parody. “and you may find yourself overwhelmed in the chip section of mickey’s deli. and you may ask yourself: what do those chips taste like? and you may tell yourself: this is not my beautiful wife rushing me to make a decision!” in this reality, i am more often than not looking around for any sign of the hermosa beach i grew up in...
