Because the starving artist thing is so cliche.
so i have been debating if i should post about this, and have decided to not name and shame, but i will share the situation. a company recently contacted me if i would like to make an illustration for them. my first thought was; oh fun! this company very much promotes the message of empowering & supportive people and small busnissowners. so i am very much here for that message.
the only problem, they wanted me to "work for free", and it was a commercial project, so they would make money off it (so it's not non-profit, charity or whatever, that would have made it a completely different situation) also, it's a bigger project so i wouldn't be the only illustrator working for free on this project.
this didn't sit right with me, so i did some digging and added up the sales amount they had share online themselves, and added it all up, this one project would make them about $65.000 at least! okay, i know there are still cost that need to be taken of this and all. but that would still leave a decent amount to pay designers something for there work.
this wasn't a case of not being able to pay the artist; this was a conscious decision not to, which felt so wrong coming from a company portraying themselves to empower the little man.
i must admit, when i said i wouldn't do it for free they replied politely, but still, paying someone for there work would have been politer.
i know bitching about this on ig won't change their attitude towards paying artist, but i just wanted to make it clear that this illusion of asking an artist for "free work" is not okay... just like any other job, illustrator/designers/artist whatever you'd like to call us, we are delivering a service and a product, so we deserve to be fairly compensated. luckily there are so many amazing client/companies out there will to be fair, but just like with everything there are a couple out there ruining it for the rest.
also i know there is a lot is going on in the world at the moment, but this just really frustrated me, and i'm just trying to keep it real with you guys ;)
