4 years in between these photos. there are so many things i could say about my journey... but honestly i’m not really sure where to start. all the time people say “wow i bet you feel so much better now!” “this is amazing, you look great!” and honestly at first when my skin cleared, no i didn’t feel better or that i looked “great”. because when you have severe cystic acne like mine was- mentally even when your skin clears you still have acne. you still feel self conscious or embarrassed of your skin. or maybe you feel insecure and avoid eye contact in conversation, or have racing thoughts about your acne coming back. it’s a weird concept to grasp unless you’ve been through it. acne can leave you with physical and emotional scars, something that not a lot of people talk about. we say all the time that healing doesn’t happen overnight- but i want to point out that sometimes emotional healing can take even longer, and that’s totally okay. .
so yes, it has been 4 years inbetween these photos but the biggest change here is the one that can’t be seen. i’ve completely transformed #glowup as a person, and for that i am incredibly proud. i went from someone who was so self conscious and couldn’t even look at herself in the mirror to someone who is confident, self accepting, and knows who she is (& won’t let something like scars or acne break her down). this community has given me all the confidence and courage i never knew i had so i want to say thank you guys for that. thank you for helping me in my journey of emotional healing and for being here with me every step of the way. by sharing your stories you’ve uplifted this community and empowered others to stand up as well. we as a collective have helped so many people just by talking about our skin and showing our bare faces. because representation = normalization, and acne is normal. we’re not hiding or ashamed of it anymore. this is who we are. and if you don’t like it, you can get out ✌🏻
