the winter palace is situated in st petersburg, russia and was the official residence of russian monarchs from 1732 to 1917. today the palace houses the hermitage museum. it was designed by many architects, most notably bartolomeo rastrelli. it’s principal façade is 215m (705 ft) long and 30m (98 ft) high. it contains 1786 doors, 1945 windows and 1500 rooms and 117 staircases. by 1905 the imperial family had decided to live in the more secured alexander palace in tsarskoe selo since revolutions were starting in russia. however, they always returned to the winter palace for formal and state occasions. following the february revolution in 1917 the palace was the seat of the russian provisional government, being the birthplace of the soviet state. • have you ever been there? ☺️
