I’m mourning the loss of jonathan gold, pulitzer-winning food writer for the la times and poet laureate of hidden gems and multiculturalism. in 2016 i photographed him for @deandeluca’s podcast @prince_street_ , which is my favorite assignment to date.
i got to sit in the back of jgold’s truck and listen to him and @laraeats discuss la’s culinary history, while stifling my giggles to not ruin @jonathanihirsch ‘s recording because jgold was so funny.
we ate fried chicken for lunch, and jgold gave me his biscuit recipe, for which he imported flour from kentucky. obviously i told him all about west virginia’s tudors biscuit world and implored him to visit.
but mostly we drove around the same 5-block radius as jgold debated where to take us to eat, sharing the history of nearly every restaurant we passed. to the untrained eye, it looked like a typical la s***p mall wasteland, but to jonathan gold, it held limitless possibilities.
