I was so happy to be able to celebrate my mom‘s birthday with her in ventura earlier this week. 🎉💛✨ she is such a rockstar of a person and although she’s having a decent battle with medical issues right now, she remains a model for me about staying optimistic, and employing a great sense of humor. 👑most everything i know about loving my friends, caring for and raising my children, and working hard came from my mom. she’s always been the person to help me talk through problems or issues and she’s always had faith in me. i love you mom. ❤️ #rockstarmom#family#happybirthday#mothersanddaughters

Hari ini abg @hakimi727 berangkat ke amd. untuk tempoh 5thn itu agak lama utk kami yg tak pernah berjauhan. tapi, untuk dia mengejar cita2 dan impian kami relakan. ya allah, jagalah dia. lindungi dia. we will miss u abg. take care❤️ #nephew#love#family
It has been 18 years since i lived and taught in china. there are many things, and many people i miss from my time there.
i am grateful for all of the lessons, challenges, and character building that came with that year living abroad. i am most grateful for the people. 💕 i often think about and pray for my friends and students who became my family while i lived there.
lunar new year always makes me sentimental. i was so blessed to have celebrated it with my student jason and his family , that wasn’t his real name, of course. all of my students had english names. 😉 which i pronounced in a heavy chicago accent, essentially, giving them a second english name they had to learn. 😂
the country literally shuts down for this holiday and allows lots of time and space for families to travel long distances to travel home to one another. the lunar new year is filled with tradition, symbolism, and rituals. but mostly, lots of stories, laughing, playing mahjong, and eating together.
i’m so grateful to have 7 out of our 11 boys returning ‘home’ tomorrow as we celebrate this holiday. and my former side kick chef, who is now in 11th grade, is coming early to prepare a special chinese dish to add to the menu.
i’m excited to share these lychees tomorrow with the kiddos. we were lucky enough to find them at the asian grocery where we shop once a year for this event.
we are actually celebrating the holiday a week early. but we will be off duty next week for the actual holiday, but as any chinese national knows, you actually have a month long window to celebrate. i take full advantage of this fact each year.
this will be our 5th year celebrating the lunar new year chinese style 💕 well, as close as we can get. 😉 each year, this tradition finds me more and more sentimental, especially since the group with which we started it, will be 12th graders next year. *continued in comments*
