I have never experienced anything like this town. the best way i could describe the feeling is one of arriving at an amusement park that was constructed perfectly for all the mountain thrill-seekers of the world to come test their hand at their adrenaline-inducing ride of choice. mountain bikers careen wildly at breakneck speeds down narrow, rocky, and winding alpine trails, while somehow avoiding making the tiniest mistake that would lead to devastating harm to life and limb. meanwhile, people willingly and seemingly without hesitation throw themselves off of the same mountain to paraglide, base jump, or to defy both death and gravity by flying in a wingsuit. slack liners complete their high wire balancing act across towering jagged slabs of mountain with a stunning crevasse in between, and rugged yet sinewy trail runners move quickly up and down the steep mountain trails at high altitude without needing to take so much as a deep breath. while in the town, you stand in the grocery store next to people carrying their backpacks fully equipped with helmets and ropes, looking to buy snacks before they set out to scale dizzyingly steep cliff faces, and others walk through town with the telltale massive packs of the paragliders who have already landed back safely in the valley after jumping from 2500m above. the cafes and pubs at night, once the buses have taken the tourists away, have outside tables that teem with small squads of mountaineers who seem to be either plotting their ascent route up the legendary mont blanc, or are out joyously celebrating and regaling others with tales of their summit of the towering peak overlooking the entire valley and all of western europe. i can only assume that in the winter, people jump out of helicopters and ski or snowboard down the fresh powder for fun... meanwhile, i trudge slowly up the mountain as i try to gradually work myself into shape, sweating profusely and coming to the realization that hikers in this town are basically one peg above the tourists who arrive for the day by bus simply to take photos of mont blanc and buy a t-shirt stating they were once in chamonix...... but at least we’re one peg above! 😂
