🏅| @sigertracip 📍| lochranza castle,isle of arran, 🏴
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
lochranza castle stands on a narrow neck of land connected to the south shore of loch ranza, at the northern tip of arran. the first castle here was erected in the late 13th or early 14th century, as a rectangular hall house defended by a small tower at the south west corner.
built in the 1400s. smailholm has survived centuries of assaults from border raiders and the elements. in 1554 reivers, or robbers, from northumberland made off with 723 cattle,108 horses and 104 prisoners from smailholm village during two night raids. tension between scotland and england made this a volatile place to live. border estates endured endless raiding as lawless reivers wreaked havoc, stealing livestock and pursuing vicious family feuds.
the formidable tower was home to the pringle family and later to the ancestors of sir walter scott.walter scott came here as a 'wee sick laddie' in 1773 staying at his grandparents farmhouse while he recovered from polio. the then abandoned tower had a powerful effect on scott's imagination. living in its shadow, he developed a lifelong affection for the stories and songs of the border country.
and still i thought that shatter'd tower the mightiest work of human power
sir walter scott, marmion 1808.
There is something magical about castles that i can’t get enough of. maybe because america is so young and we don’t have these type of ancient dwellings built by ruling parties. when planning out trips i always map out my castle visits. what thing do you love to see on your travels?
constructed between 1584 and 1589 by the 7th earl of tolquhon, william forbes. it was an extension to a previous tower house called preston's tower.
this was the first of three castles that day and it was a lovely one to start off with. unfortunately closed, i was still able to wander around the castle grounds and as such, no sign of any creepy a*s mannequins!
one interesting thing i did spot were bee boles in the outer castle walls. it's not widely known, but william forbes feared an attack by nicolas cage and knew he had a fear of bees and this would therefore keep cage away from the castle...well...that's what i wish they were for. they were used as a practical way of keeping bees and making sure they were sheltered from wind and rain...and nicolas cage
the castle was inhabited by the forbes until 1718 when they were forced to move due to debts from the failed darien scheme.
- this is the dramatic but beautiful cliff top fortress dunluce castle in northern ireland. definately one of britains most photogenic castles, dunluce sits on the breathtaking northern irish coast and is a certainty for a visit to any castle enthusiast. step across the bridge into history and enjoy.
- constructed in the early 16th century by the macquillian family, this stronghold was once a bustling thriving castle at the heart of a small medieval coastal town. unfortunately the surrounding town was destroyed during the irish rebellion of 1642 but the castle remained. due to losses in violent major battles the castle would pass into the hands of the clan macdonald of antrim and of dunnyveg. by 1690, and the fallout from the battle of the boyne, the owners would be ruined and the castle, no longer their residence, would sadly fall into a state of disrepair. - dunluce castle is a very popular and beautiful place to visit along with its surrounding antrim coastal cliffs and should not be missed while in the area. the castle is owned by northern ireland environmental agency and entry will cost you just £5.50 for an adult. parking is available just a short walk from the visitor centre.
