A few weeks ago I headed up to Somersby Falls about an hour north of Sydney. It was tricky to shoot in the rain but that's when waterfalls are at their best! (Bengaluru, India)
“I was born & brought up in Australia. I’d just finished high school & at 17, I joined a volunteer group that taught underprivileged kids in the Dominican Republic. That one experience completely changed how I saw the world – I realized what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to help people & make a difference.
I decided to get my Bachelors degree in Engineering & Arts from the University of Sydney. After graduating, I even worked with Engineers Without Borders for 2 years. The learnings & skills I picked up over time, moulded me into who I am today.
In 2012, when I came to India with a few friends, I realised that a lot of people who’d migrated to the city, were underprivileged & lived in slums. But what unnerved me the most was the fact that they all used kerosene for something as basic as light, which is very harmful! They’d lived like this for decades without anyone batting an eyelid.
I could barely believe what was happening & knew something needed to be done. That’s how my team & I founded Pollinate Energy – we trained people from local communities to distribute & install solar lighting systems. We managed to provide affordable access to light & gave employment to several people too!
I remember this one time I met a lady who was 25 & married with 2 kids. Her husband was the only breadwinner of the family which wasn’t enough to meet their needs. I knew we could help her out – so we equipped women with sewing machines & helped them build a better life.
We’ve impacted over 130,000 lives today & I couldn’t be prouder. But there’s no doubt that we’ve had our share of ups & downs. We faced problems while trying to communicate to the people, we didn’t know if our products would be accepted & we even ran out of funds. But with every new challenge, we pushed ourselves harder.
We never over-thought or over-analyzed any problem – we just dealt with it. Because we had our eye on the bigger picture. A world where everyone has access to basic necessities that make their life what it is. A world where no one has to struggle, simply to survive. A world where every single human being, is given the dignity & respect they deserve.”
