Putting paint on the silk is the fun part, but there is a little work that goes into the prep.
the night before, 4 tsp of carrageenan powder is blended to make 1 gallon of size (thickened water). and it takes about 3 gallons to fill my table to make 11” x 60” scarves.
next, the silk needs treatments to make it receptive to the paint. silk and cotton being natural fibers, are porous, so using hot water opens the fibers.
the first treatment is a detergent called synthrapol. this removes any oils from hands touching the material and any possible silk worm gum that could still be imbedded in the fibers.
the second treatment is with alum. alum makes the paint stick to the fabric. it is also corrosive if not diluted properly, or left on the fabric too long (over 48 hours). after the treatments, the scarves line dry and are ready for the magic of marbling!
Boy beauty is another thing i want to work on in my career, about gender equality, a book first, then a set of miniseries' for nickelodeon. along with this and the geriatrics, i cant wait to work on them later in my career. #artistsoninstagram
