what do you think of this? do you think we only hear negative birth stories or do you wish you’d had better information-so you could have made informed choices?
so many women are simply caught up in the politics of birth. why can’t we provide all the information? for truly woman-centred care, surely that would mean prioritising the physical and mental wellbeing of the mother? instead we are still seeing our healthcare professionals refusing to acknowledge that common ideologies around birth is really the problem we have here. what does it really mean if there is a high caesarean section rate here in australia? does it mean that women will be prevented from life-altering injuries so they can better look after themselves and their families? so the who recommends 10-15% cesarean section rate...this figure was plucked out of thin air (which has been documented). if we want to quote info from the who then they also address positive childbirth experiences by stating the individualised care creates positive outcomes and yet the ‘towards normal birth’ policy in nsw is basically adopting a one-size-fits-all approach to caring for women. in the who’s intrapartum care for positive childbirth policy document it states: respectful maternity care - which refers to care organized and provided to all women in a manner that maintains their dignity, privacy and confidentially, ensures freedom from harm and mistreatment, and enables informed choice and continuous support during labour and childbirth is recommended’. yet this isn’t happening, we know it’s not happening because 1 in 3 women here in australia identify their birth as traumatic. things needs to change, we must continue to speak out until we are heard #informedconsent#birth#sbsthefeed
