Larry Lucas Kaleak is the co-captain of Yugu crew. Though the captain makes the most important decisions for the crew, the co-captain deals with many of the logistics of being on the sea ice and much of the gear preparation for the months camping.

This portrait is one of a series on an indigenous whaling crew from Arctic Alaska known as #YuguCrew. In the past five years with Yugu Crew, I’ve gone from spending time with acquaintances to feeling a part of a family. Together we’ve endured breaking sea ice. We survived a polar bear attack. We weathered botulism from spoiled meat. Through all of it, I’ve been given the gift of a deeper understanding of Iñupiaq culture, and the importance of the agviq, the bowhead whale, to the community. One symbol of the respect that the Iñupiaq have for the whale is the adherence to wearing whaling parkas. These parkas are the traditional garment that offer camouflage on the sea ice – and a unified embrace of heritage handed down by past generations. Aarigaa!

Qallu 'Tad' Reich is the captain of Yugu crew. Each year the umialiq spends upwards of $10,000 to support his crew. In return, he will have the knowledge that he has provided for his community.

Harriet Leavitt Reich is the wife of an Iñupiaq whaling crew's captain. For Iñupiat, the captain's wife holds a position every bit as important as the captain's. She handles preparations, coordination with the crew, and feeds everyone for the approximately four months a year of whaling.

“CLOAKED IN SEALSKIN suits, a flock of kayakers cuts across a steely expanse of frigid water... from a distance, the image appears timeless.” My photo story on Greenland’s kayaking heritage with @natgeotravel. Link to story in bio.

An iceberg in Ilulissat, Greenland's famous Ice Fjord. In Kalallisut (Greenlandic), an iceberg is called an #Iluliaq. This series examines the form and beauty of this glacial ice, and reminds us that as the climate warms, in a short time only photographs of them will remain.

The landmark Sermitsiaq mountain towers over the northern portion of Nuuk, Greenland's capital city.

This is the series #GreenlandRenewed, a look at Greenland's cultural revolution of the past 40 years. As Greenlanders have asserted their independence and moved towards self-governance, they have also embraced a national identity that comes from their Iñuit heritage, blending it with a powerfully envisioned anti-colonial modernity. #greenland #kayak #qajaq #inuit #arctic
