Overheated huskies on a dogsledding team roll and eat snow to cool down after a run in Utqiagviq, Alaska.

This is a series called Ancient Arts. Despite a rapidly urbanizing world, many modern people feel the allure of ancient ways of life that are both physically demanding and spiritually rewarding. As the numbers of hunters and fishermen continue to decline, so have their historically powerful support for conservation of wildlands. With participation in nature vanishing, will there be a place for those who believe nature is more than a weekend museum?

Portrait of a lead dog from a team managed by Geoff Carroll. Though dog teams were once used for transport across the Arctic, they are no longer used except for sport in Alaska. Geoff's team is the only one in Utqiagviq.

Falconer Aaron Allred @allredaaron trains a young goshawk and terrier to work together as a hunting team. For Aaron, falconry is far more than an ancient hunting sport, but a gateway to raptor biology and a deeper understanding of the ecology of the Pacific Northwest. Falconry has led him in many different directions, from zoology to big tree climbing.

A young goshawk is hooded by falconer Aaron Allred @allredaaron. This large accipiter hawk requires relationship building for many months with Aaron before it is ready to fly.

Jim Gnapp @gnappanderthal lights a candle inside a wall tent on his trapline in winter. Ever resourceful, he has repurposed soda cans to use as candle reflectors so he can read and avoid the -26C temperatures outside.

Canadian trapper Jim Gnapp @gnappanderthal lives and continues a rare occupation in today's world. He spends the -20C winters on his trapline near Goldbridge, British Columbia, where he works with Fish and Wildlife to manage the populations of furbearing mammals.
