Are these the biggest diamonds you’ve ever seen? 🤩
-
They’re actually incredible icebergs, drifting in with the tide at the extraordinary black sand beach in Iceland. As the waves wash in, so do these glistening pieces of ice, resembling ice sculptures or pieces of art in the beautiful sunlight. I love photographing them, as they offer up so many different compositions during the wintertime! 💎 No piece of ice is alike. You can find some pieces shaped like hearts, some shaped like musical instruments and others taking on a form of their own!

The waves come crashing in at Iceland’s diamond ice beach! 💎
-
This is one of my favourite places for photography, where you can find pieces of ice dotting the black sand beach throughout the seasons – winter, spring, autumn and summer! Winter is my favourite time to photograph them though, when the sun is low to the horizon, creating very dreamy conditions ❄️ These chunks of ice are actually the remnants of much larger icebergs that have calved from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Afterwards, they float about for a while in the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon before eventually making their way out towards the ocean. Once in the ocean, the icebergs get pummelled by the waves and reshaped into these jewel-like structures, coming to rest on the beach with the incoming tide 📸
-
Experience the ethereal light of winter in Iceland! 🤩🇮🇸 Check out our range of winter photography workshops at the LINK IN MY BIO.

Check out these amazing textures deep within the walls of this crystal blue ice cave! ❄️☃️
-
Ice caves such as this are formed as melting ice creates a flow of water within the glacier. It’s truly an extraordinary work of nature. Photographing one can be tricky though, as you need to have skills to capture the available light. A wide angle lens is also very useful to bring along, so that you can get all of the details in. Last but not least, although they can be very beautiful in themselves, it can be even more interesting to include a person in your shot as it will allow you to show some scale and depth with your photo of an ice cave! 📸
-
Push your creative boundaries and experience the exhilaration of Iceland in winter!! 🤩🇮🇸 Check out our range of winter photography workshops at the LINK IN MY BIO.

Doesn’t this look like a diamond? 😉💎
-
All year round, large icebergs shaped like glittering jewels crash into the ice beach near Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. It’s a breathtaking sight! Although they may seem a little bit magical to begin with, there is actually a scientific explanation for why they occur ✨ After calving off the nearby glacier, they are reshaped by the sea into interesting shapes of all sizes. Imagine popping one of these onto your finger! 💍

Who says this mountain is over-photographed? I think it looks amazing all the time! 🏔☃️
-
You’ve undoubtedly seen this cone-shaped mountain in photographs, or perhaps on the TV show Game of Thrones. This is Kirkjufell, the King of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. At the start of winter, when the first snow falls, it mingles with the autumn colours which can create a really beautiful effect. It’s also the time of year when ice begins to form at the base of the mountain in its gorgeous waterfalls ❄️ Landscape photography here is a real treat because no matter the time of the year, this mountain is incredibly photogenic. However, in winter, you get the added opportunity of capturing the Northern Lights above it while it has its winter coat on! 📸

A blazing morning at the ice beach, where chunks of ice calved from the nearby glacier wash up like diamonds on the shore ❄️💎
-
These incredible icebergs make for stunning subjects in landscape photography, though you’ll have to get your feet a little wet for the perfect shot. As long as you’re careful, then it’s quite an exhilarating experience and can ensure incredible photos every time! The trick here is to use a wide or standard zoom lens and to get down low close to the icebergs, then to press the shutter button as soon as the waves go out for a dreamy motion effect 📸

A beautiful aurora over the Jökulsárlon glacier lagoon in Iceland’s south! ✨☃️
-
This is one of my favourite photography locations, where you can photograph icebergs that have calved off the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. The icebergs float serenely in the still waters of the lagoon, before drifting out through a small inlet towards the sea. This location is particularly good for shooting the Northern Lights, as it offers a number of incredible foregrounds, which make for fascinating compositions 📸

It’s amazing how a thick layer of snow can change the landscape in such dramatic ways! Can you still recognise this enigmatic waterfall beneath its winter coat? ❄️☃️
-
Located in the Highlands, Goðafoss waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the country, falling from a height of 12 metres (39 feet) over a width of 30 metres (98 feet). It may not be the tallest but it has a lot of power behind it! Its name actually translates to ‘Waterfall of the Gods’, and you can certainly see why. It is considered part of the Diamond Circle sightseeing route but can be tricky to get to if you’ll be driving in winter. The photography opportunities there are endless though so it’s worth the visit! 📸

The mighty Kirkjufell on a frosty winter day ❄️☃️
-
Winter is one of my favourite times to photograph this iconic mountain, when it is swathed in a layer of pristine white snow. The waterfalls at its base may become frozen, making for incredible foregrounds at every angle! It’s no wonder that this has been used as a filming location for Game of Thrones, as it looks exactly like something you would find north of the Wall. Does anybody know the name that this mountain was given for the TV series? 📸

Peering through a hole in an iceberg on the Diamond Ice Beach in Iceland! ❄️☃️
-
This black sand beach is unique in that large icebergs wash up ashore onto it after calving from the nearby Breidarmerkurjökull glacier 💎 The different shaped pieces of ice make for a magnificent foreground in landscape photography, particularly as the waves wash up around them to create a spectacular drawn-out effect 📸
-
During winter, this beautiful beach is littered with hundreds of icebergs, shining like diamonds in the sun! Come away with us to find your own jewel 🤩🇮🇸 Check out our range of winter photography workshops at the LINK IN MY BIO.

A cosy cabin in the snow ❄️☃️
-
Winter in Iceland can be a very harsh time of year, when snowfall can result in certain parts of the country being cut off from others! 🏠 To prepare for this, the locals stock up on food and supplies. When you’re travelling, you’ll need to be just as prepared, just in case a road becomes closed and your plans get upheaved! 🚗 When this happens, you’ll need to make sure that you have back-up photography locations to capture this winter wonderland in all its glory 📸
