If you’re in minneapolis this weekend, may 18-19, you get a rare chance to experience some of our history. “doors open minneapolis” will feature the pillsbury “a” mill as one of the many locations around the city available for behind-the-scenes tours.
for more information, look for a mill artist lofts, under venues, on doorsopenminneapolis.org (you also can go under the mill, look for that information under the listing on the event website for pillsbury a mill underground). the pillsbury “a” mill was built in 1881 and at that time it was the world’s largest and most technologically-advanced flour mill, surpassing the size of cadwallader washburn’s recently-built mill across the river (washburn’s company was the predecessor to general mills. pillsbury was eventually acquired by general mills in 2001). underneath the mill, water wheels took in the mississippi river’s current through a canal dug underneath, which powered the machines up above that milled the flour.
a developer, dominium, renovated the mill and the entire pillsbury complex on the riverfront block for affordable housing (about 250 apartments), which opened in 2015.
Rather than go to a landfill, perfectly good surplus food is being rescued and redistributed to hungry people in the uk, thanks to @fareshareuk and the general mills foundation, who together recovered enough surplus food to enable 30 million meals last year alone. read more about what fareshare and volunteers from our uxbridge, uk, office are doing to support food rescue (link in bio). #foodheroes

Happy #starwarsday! in 1978, star wars “hang gliders” were offered in trix and lucky charms boxes. four miniature models – x-wing fighter, millennium falcon, tie fighter and land speeder – came precut on paper and just needed to be assembled. once hung on a string and pulled tight, the spaceship would glide like it was really in flight! #maythe4thbewithyou

#tbt our roots in supporting young farmers grow deep! in 1983, a box of @luckycharms could get you closer to your very own “lucky’s magic mini-farm.” a set included 2 planters, 5 kinds of seeds, a miniature hoe and shovel, plastic watering can, barn cutout and an instruction manual. and what’s a farm without some animals? lucky has that covered – each magic mini-farm also included 5 farm animals. #luckycharms#farming#earthday#throwbackthursday
