In 2012 when I was 14 years old, my best friend told me that she was going through mental health problems. This was a huge shock to me as I didn’t know much about mental health. I wanted to be a supportive friend, so I started researching mental health so I could understand more about it. My best friend always told me that my support meant so much to her, which always stuck with me. About a year later on April 8th, 2013, I was scrolling through my Twitter feed when I found out that three girls I followed were thinking of suicide. After tweeting them support, I began to think how I could prevent situations like this from happening. That’s when I thought of a simple idea: pair people together as buddies. This led to the creation of Buddy Project (@buddyproject), which is now a non-profit movement aiming to prevent suicide and raise awareness for mental health. We’ve connected over 215,000 people around the world with a buddy in the past five years. We hope to expand our community even more with the release of our app, which we’re in the process of creating. Since becoming a 501c3 organization in 2015, we’ve raised a couple thousand dollars for mental health facilities in the United States. Buddy Project has helped thousands of people find an accepting and loving community to talk about mental health. Mental health is important and no one should be ashamed to talk about it. You are loved, you are strong, you are capable, and you are valid. 💙

5 years ago, I was a 15-year-old girl who barely had any friends. I felt so misunderstood by everyone at school and only made friendship through the internet. The internet gave me the chance to find people throughout the globe who shared the same interests as me and understood social anxiety & mental health. I knew there were others out there who also had mental illness, but no positive peer support system. I didn’t want others to constantly feel alone and not loved like I did. I wanted everyone to have a community where they could feel loved, safe, and accepted. This simple idea is what influenced me to create Buddy Project. The past 5 years have been a journey and I’ve grown so much as a person. I’m so grateful I was able to transform into the person I am today. I’m glad that teenage me kept pushing on and doing what I was passionate about even when people told I was too young to make a change. Happy 5th birthday Buddy Project 💙💚

Today is #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving. It would mean so much to me if you could donate to Buddy Project, the suicide prevention non-profit organization that I founded when I was 15. I founded BP after discovering my best friends from school & online were going through mental illness and suicidal thoughts. Ever since then, mental health advocacy has been a major part of my life. Over the past four and a half years of running Buddy Project, I’ve learned so much about mental health and have grown so much as a person. I’ve finally been able to embrace the fact that I have anxiety – both generalized and social. When I created Buddy Project I was going through extreme social anxiety. All throughout middle school and most of high school, I found it hard to make friends and thought that everyone secretly hated me. I was able to find a supportive community on Twitter where I made some of my best friends. We became friends simply because we liked the same artists & youtubers. My experience with online communities inspired me to create Buddy Project. I didn’t want other people to feel alone like I did. I realized that online friends can be just as impactful as friends made in person. Buddy Project has paired 195,000 people since being founded in April 2013 and we are currently working on an app to pair the buddies automatically so more people can find a community.
-
Your donation can help Buddy Project support more mental health and recovery centers throughout the United States. Mental health treatment needs to become more affordable & accessible. Everyone deserves mental health care. Although 1 in 5 people have a mental illness, 5 in 5 people have mental health.

If you are interested in donating or becoming a part of Buddy Project’s movement, please message me for more information 💗
