From where i drone
so stoked to finally share this short film i created in collaboration with @polarpro. it's a film about why i started from where i drone, why i love aerial photography and creating just in general. to me creating is about connection.
check out the link in my bio or ig story to watch the whole thing.
huge thanks to my bud @philipleclerc for the amazing cinematography and edit.
🎉🎊 hey y'all i'm excited to share that the hashtag i started waaaaay back in 2015 (#fromwhereidrone) just crossed the 1,000,000 mark on instagram. these are some of the first images i tagged it on. it's a bit wild thinking back because it all started off as a little joke ;) let me explain…
on one of my first flights i took my dji phantom drone up and tilted the camera so it pointed straight down. i was quickly taken back that i could even do that with a camera several hundred feet in the air and then i was overcome by what i saw because the world below looked so small and compressed. •
a bit later when i wanted to share some of my first drone images on instagram i remember thinking about the super popular hashtag #fromwhereistand. you know that hashtag people use when pointing their camera down to show off their cool shoes or show an interesting floor?
well i thought it would be funny to play off of it since i was pointing my camera down as well… just from a really high angle!
so, every time i posted a drone image i used the hashtag #fromwhereidrone. i would get some laughs here and there (proof that some people got the joke) but then several months later i decided to actually click on the tag and i was blown away to discover that there were over 500 drone photos tagged with it as well! this was really cool because at the time it was hard to find anyone with a drone, let alone be inspired by amazing drone content from all around the world. •
that is when i decided to create @fromwhereidrone and then later http://fromwhereidrone.com. i started both of those endeavors to inspire and teach people about the world of drones. what's been so cool is to see that a simple hashtag has allowed me and others to connect with other like-minded drone pilots from around the globe!
so here's to the next 1,000,000 tags! in honor of this big milestone i'll be giving away a drone this week! stay tuned for an announcement on that tomorrow morning over on @fromwhereidrone !
The fam and i were hoping to catch the "super blood wolf moon" 💉🐺🌝 from our property tonight since there isn't very much light pollution up there but unfortunately it was too cloudly and the moon was hidden ;( the consolation prize though was being able to see the lake light up like we have never seen before with all the beautiful sunset colors. @ourmoderndwelling
A friend of mine is a police officer in san diego and he asked if i wanted to do a ride along. so yesterday i had the opportunity to follow along with him and those who protect and serve the city. i documented the day in my ig stories if you would like to check it out. 🚔
Another fav from 2018. i really like how the colors came together for this one. i was able to create a complimentary color scheme with the warmth of the golden building and the coolness of the sky. i also like the slight highlight on the right side thanks to being able to catch some light from the sun right before it set. it’s interesting to note that the flatiron building stands at just 22 stories tall and was once one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world. when construction began, locals placed bets on what would happen when the wind knocked it down. 😅💨
Happy new year all! looking back on 2018 it's clear to me that i didn't share a whole of images on instagram compared to years past (i've been on here since 2010…crazy!). i actually didn't even take a lot of pictures when i compare it to a typical year. it's not really because of some creative funk but more so because of life. to be honest it was a pretty wild year juggling big life moments like moving, finishing graduate school, having a new baby, almost building our home on our property and then not, close family members needing help and lots of other stuff in-between all that. and while i don't know how the squares on my grid will be filled this year i do know that i have so much to be grateful and thankful for! we are healthy, loved and cared for. so with all that being said i have some favorite pics from 2018 that i wanted to share. this image was taken out in the coachella valley desert. i remember at the time being bummed that the light wasn't too great. so i decided to bring the drone back and just call it a day but as i did i tilted my drone's camera straight down and saw this scene where the light actually created some nice clean shadows from the desert brush. this moment is a reminder to me to always keep looking for the good even when it might be hard to see at first. #fromwhereidrone
